The electronic signature certificate, also called digital certificate, represents formatted data, which links a certain subscriber (physical person or legal person) to their public key, which is stored on a smart card.

Types of StampIT qualified electronic signature certificates

• StampIT Doc - it is issued to physical persons
• StampIT DocPro - it is issued to physical persons that are authorized to represent legal persons

Types of electronic signature certificates with specific designation

• StampIT Enterprise - it is issued at request of the legal person to physical persons who are officers of the legal person. Physical persons are bounded with the name of the legal person, but they are not authorized to make electronic statements on behalf of the legal person.
• StampIT Server - it is issued at request of legal persons and it is designed for provision of secured communications with a web-site
• StampIT Object - it is issued to legal persons and it could be used for signing software objects and components

Technical Details

About e-signature

The electronic signature is realized by a key pair which is mathematically connected - it consists of a private and a public key. The private key generates the electronic signature and it is accessible only to the signing person/author. The public key is used for verification of the electronic signature. Any one participating in the communication has access to it. It is published in a public register.

The public key infrastructure provides undeniable guarantee for communicating parties' identity, renders documentation forgery impossible, keeps communication secret and turns the electronic document into an official document. The information transformed with the private key could be restored to its original form only with the use of the relevant key. In that way it is guaranteed that the person in control of the private key is the author of the statement. The authorship is verified using the public key corresponding to the private one.

In the signing and verification process of the electronic signature there is an identifier taking place derived from the content of the signed document. The identifier changes if only a letter of the document is changed. In that way it is guaranteed that any change in the document content could be tracked.

In order to be sure of the identity of the person signing the document, the verifying party needs information about the person in control of the private key. We have to connect that person with the key pair in such a way that the secret of their private key to be kept. In that regard an electronic signature certificate is generated, which contains information about the person and their public key.

About the provider

The electronic signature certificate is issued by a certification services provider who is a guarantee of the "electronic identity" of the persons participating in communication.

In Bulgaria the operation of the certification service provider and the content of the certificates issued by the provider, are regulated by the Electronic Document and Electronic Signature Act and the regulations of the law application.

An answer to the question who signed the electronic statement is given by the content of the electronic signature certificate. Hence the great responsibility of the certification services provider for their operation and especially the way electronic signature certificates are generated.

The procedure for issuing electronic signature certificates of Information Services PLC is developed in such a way that the certificate is issued only after the submission of all required documents for the identification of the person and their physical appearance. To guarantee that the private key is not accessible to the certification services provider, the key pair is generated in the crypto-processor of the smart card. The private key is stored in a protected area of the smart card, where it could not be read and it is used only by its crypto-processor. The content of the electronic signature is signed by the certification services provider, after that it is stored on a smart card and published in a public register. The client receives the smart card and data for smart card activation via different channels, which gives additional security guarantee.

In that way Information Services PLC as a Certification services provider, using a definite procedure, guarantees that there exists a certain person behind a certain private key. The person knows how to use and store the private key and is aware of usage limitations and liabilities, and that there exists correspondence between the private and the public key.

The electronic signature is valid if it was generated within the validity period of the certificate. The provider is obliged to support means for electronic signature verification, such as certificate revocation list.

The certificate content is in conformity with the Electronic Document and Electronic Signature Act.
