Over 2.2 million electronic “white” prescriptions have been issued through eRx mobile application

Medical professionals have issued over 2.2 million electronic so called “white” prescriptions through eRx mobile application, according to data from National Health Information System (NHIS). On average, more than 5,000 prescriptions for antibiotics, antidiabetics, and other medications are issued daily through the app. Data show that every fourth “white” prescription is generated via eRx, indicating its effectiveness, reliability, and ease of use.

The mobile application was developed and launched in 2023 by Information Services and has been downloaded over 60,000 times from  App Store and Google Play. Nearly 21,000 medical professionals actively use it each month.

“eRx makes process easier for both patients and medical personnel during home visits, especially in remote and hard-to-reach areas,” stated Branimir Petakov, Head of  Mobile Applications Department at Information Services. According to him, the app provides easy and quick access to  NHIS even when specialized medical software is not available. It is extremely useful for both medical professionals, offering fast, convenient, and secure way to issue and fulfill prescriptions, and for patients, as it saves time and resources for everyone involved in the process.

Through eRx, doctors, dentists, physician assistants, and veterinarians can issue prescriptions anytime and from anywhere, even without an internet connection. Prescriptions are securely stored on the mobile device and automatically synchronized with  NHIS once the connection is restored, becoming part of patient’s electronic health record. Prescription can be fulfilled at any pharmacy, and medical professionals can track its status - whether it is active, fulfilled, or canceled.

The app reports an exceptionally low cancellation rate - under 0.5%. Only 9,500 prescriptions have been canceled since its launch.

To further facilitate physicians, the ability to create templates is provided. So far, over 73,000 prescription templates have been created, significantly speeding up  prescribing process. With version 1.6.0 of the app, templates are synchronized across all devices used by  medical professional. A list and details of  templates can be viewed from each device, and they can be created, used and deleted. Data shows that over 51,000 prescriptions have been reissued to date.

“eRx application is establishing itself as an important step toward more accessible, efficient, and modern healthcare in Bulgaria, providing transparency, public accountability, better treatment coordination, and therapy traceability,” added Branimir Petakov.
